BRIEF HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF THE OBA N'ISI PROJECT
The ancient palace in Onicha-Olona was built in 1505 AD by Prince Orhogbua and his brother, Prince Ugbe, when they established the settlement of the Ancient Warriors. Prince Orhogbua and Prince Ugbe were sons of Oba Esigie. In 1550 AD, Prince Ugbe became the first Oba N' Isi Ika (King). Upon assuming the throne, as the Oba N' Isi Ika, Ugbe expanded the palace.
Timeline:
In 1505 AD, Prince Orhogbua became the Enogie of Ikhonmioto Okhomina (present day Onicha-Olona) and the neighboring towns and villages during the reign of His Father, Oba Esigie of Great Benin Empire. When Oba Esigie joined the ancestors, Prince Orhogbua ascended the throne of the Ancestors in the present-day Benin City in 1547 AD as Oba Orhogbua and made his younger brother, Prince Ugbe, the Enogie of the then newly formed Ikhonmioto.
In 1550 AD, the palace was expanded when Oba Orhogbua installed his younger brother, Prince Osazuwa, the Oba n'Isi Ika (Oba n'Isi) over the then newly formed Ikhonmioto Kingdom (Onochi Ani in Igbo translation) (covering the area where they fought war) and commissioned the then new palace of Oba N'Isi Ika, Ugbe Aha-Eze.
In 1901 AD, the palace was destroyed by the British during the British invasion that resulted in the Ekumeku war of 1883-1914 AD.
On the 5th of December 2023, Prince Ephraim Odiaka Nwabuokei, a scion of Oba N'Isi Ika Ugbe, through a groundbreaking ceremony, launched the Oba N’Isi project, to reconstruct and revive the ancient palace of Ugbe, the Oba N'Isi.
Prince Ephraim Odiakaosa Nwabuokei deems it necessary to rebuild the ancient palace and restore the lost glory of Onicha-Olona people and ancestors:
“The essence of the reconstruction is for the palace to serve both as an historical monument and as a museum where tourists can visit and learn the ancient history of our people and the events till date. Restoring the edifice will help preserve history and help posterity be in touch with the past and the present”. In addition, according to Prince Nwabuokei, “the ancient palace of Oba N’Isi is a piece of historical edifice that holds a great deal of history of the Great Benin Empire. More importantly, it is a treasure to the present day Anioma, Delta State, Edo State, Nigeria, and the entire continent of Africa as well as the British Empire. This is because, the decisions made in that Palace in 1883 AD and 1897 AD, culminated in a 31-year resistance to the British punitive invasion of the Kingdom which led to the war that is today known as Ekumeku War”.
This Project is being done in honor and memory of Oba Ugbe, the first King of Ikhonmioto.
